Top Things to Do in Zagreb

Zagreb is one of those cities that feels easy to enjoy. It is walkable, relaxed, full of cafés, parks, museums, markets, and historic streets, but still lively enough to feel like a real European capital.

Whether you are here for a few days, a semester, an internship, or a longer stay, there is always something to discover. Here are some of the best things to do in Zagreb.

1. Walk through the Upper Town

The Upper Town is one of the most charming parts of Zagreb and a great place to start exploring the city. Its cobbled streets, historic buildings, small squares, and viewpoints give you a good feeling for old Zagreb.

Make sure to visit:

  • St. Mark’s Church
  • Stone Gate
  • Lotrščak Tower
  • Strossmayer Promenade
  • The area around Katarina Square
  • The viewpoints overlooking the city

Many of Zagreb’s most recognizable attractions are within walking distance from each other, which makes the Upper Town ideal for a slow afternoon walk. Zagreb Tourist Board also highlights several key sights in this area among the city’s top attractions.

2. Visit Ban Jelačić Square

Ban Jelačić Square is Zagreb’s central meeting point and one of the easiest places to recognize when you arrive. It connects the main shopping streets, the Lower Town, Dolac Market, and the route toward the Cathedral and Upper Town.

It is also a useful orientation point if you are new to the city. Many tram lines pass nearby, and locals often use the square as a meeting place before going for coffee, shopping, or a walk through the center.

3. Explore Dolac Market

Dolac Market is located just above Ban Jelačić Square and is one of the best places to see everyday Zagreb life. You will find fruit, vegetables, flowers, local products, and small food shops in and around the market area.

It is especially nice in the morning, when the market is busiest. Even if you do not buy anything, it is worth visiting for the atmosphere and photos.

4. See Zagreb Cathedral

Zagreb Cathedral is one of the city’s most famous landmarks. Its twin towers are visible from many parts of the city and are often used as a visual symbol of Zagreb.

The area around Kaptol and the Cathedral is also close to Dolac Market, Tkalčićeva Street, and the Upper Town, so it is easy to include in a city-center walk. Some restoration work may affect access or views at different times, so check the current situation when planning your visit.

5. Have coffee on Tkalčićeva Street

Zagreb has a strong café culture, and Tkalčićeva Street is one of the most popular areas for coffee, drinks, and casual evenings out.

The street is full of cafés, bars, and restaurants, and it is especially lively in the afternoon and evening. For many visitors, sitting outside with coffee is one of the simplest and most enjoyable Zagreb experiences.

6. Visit the Museum of Broken Relationships

The Museum of Broken Relationships is one of Zagreb’s most unique museums. It is located in the Upper Town and presents personal objects and stories connected to breakups, love, memory, and relationships.

It is unusual, emotional, and very different from a traditional museum. The museum itself describes its Zagreb location as being in the historic Upper Town, close to many other tourist attractions.

7. Relax in Zrinjevac and the Lenuci Horseshoe

Zrinjevac is one of the most beautiful parks in the city center. It is part of the green sequence of parks and squares often called the Lenuci Horseshoe.

This area is perfect for a relaxed walk, especially if you enjoy architecture, trees, fountains, and calmer city spaces. During different seasons, Zrinjevac is also used for outdoor events, food stands, concerts, and Advent activities.

8. Visit the Croatian National Theatre

The Croatian National Theatre is one of the most elegant buildings in Zagreb. Even if you do not attend a performance, the building and the square around it are worth visiting.

The area is also close to the Museum of Arts and Crafts, university buildings, cafés, and several nice walking routes through the Lower Town.

9. Spend time in Maksimir Park

Maksimir is Zagreb’s largest and most famous park. It is a great place to escape the city center without actually leaving the city.

You can walk through forest paths, visit lakes, relax on benches, or simply enjoy a quieter green environment. Maksimir is also home to Zagreb Zoo, which can be a nice option for families or anyone looking for an easy outdoor activity.

10. Go to Jarun Lake

Jarun Lake is one of the best places in Zagreb for outdoor activities. It is popular for walking, cycling, running, rowing, skating, and summer relaxation.

In warmer months, Jarun feels like Zagreb’s city beach. It is a good place to spend a sunny afternoon, especially if you want a break from buildings, traffic, and the city center.

11. Visit Bundek Lake

Bundek is another popular lake and park area, located in Novi Zagreb. It is spacious, calm, and good for walking, picnics, and spending time outdoors.

It is also a good option if you live in Novi Zagreb or want to explore a part of the city outside the historic center.

12. Explore Mirogoj Cemetery

Mirogoj is one of the most beautiful and peaceful places in Zagreb. It is not only a cemetery, but also an important architectural and historical site, known for its arcades, greenery, sculptures, and calm atmosphere.

It is a little outside the strict city center, but it is worth visiting if you enjoy architecture, photography, history, or peaceful walks. Zagreb Tourist Board lists Mirogoj among Zagreb’s top attractions.

13. Take the shortest funicular ride

Zagreb’s funicular connects the Lower Town with the Upper Town. The ride is very short, but it is one of those small Zagreb experiences that visitors often remember.

You can also walk up instead, but the funicular is a fun and easy way to reach the Upper Town if you are nearby.

14. Discover Zagreb’s museums

Zagreb has many museums, from classic cultural institutions to quirky and modern collections.

Depending on your interests, you can visit:

  • Museum of Broken Relationships
  • Zagreb City Museum
  • Museum of Contemporary Art
  • Technical Museum Nikola Tesla
  • Archaeological Museum
  • Ethnographic Museum
  • Croatian Museum of Naïve Art
  • Museum of Illusions

Zagreb is known for its mix of traditional, unusual, and creative museums, and several travel guides highlight the city’s strong museum scene.

15. Walk through Ilica and the city center streets

Ilica is one of Zagreb’s main streets and a good route for shopping, cafés, small stores, bakeries, and everyday city life.

From Ilica, you can easily reach Cvjetni Square, Bogovićeva Street, the main square, and several small passages and courtyards. It is a good area to explore without a strict plan.

16. Enjoy Advent in Zagreb

If you are in Zagreb in December, Advent is one of the best times to experience the city. The center becomes full of lights, music, food stands, decorations, and outdoor winter atmosphere.

Advent locations usually spread across several central squares and parks, including Ban Jelačić Square, Zrinjevac, European Square, and the area around King Tomislav Square. Exact locations and dates can change each year, so check the official city information before planning.

17. Go up to Medvednica or Sljeme

If you like hiking, nature, and views, Medvednica mountain is one of the best escapes from the city. Sljeme, the highest area of Medvednica, is popular for hiking, fresh air, forest paths, and weekend trips.

It is especially nice if you are staying in Zagreb longer and want to experience the city beyond the center.

18. Try local food and bakeries

Zagreb has many restaurants, bakeries, cafés, and casual food spots. You do not need a luxury restaurant to enjoy local food culture.

Try a bakery breakfast, visit a traditional restaurant, have coffee and cake, or explore different neighborhoods for more local places. Zagreb is a city where food and coffee are part of everyday life.

19. Use trams and explore different neighborhoods

Zagreb’s tram network makes it easy to explore beyond the central tourist area. Once you know the basics, you can visit different neighborhoods, parks, shopping areas, and residential districts.

For longer stays, this is one of the best ways to understand the city better.

20. Take your time

Zagreb is not a city that needs to be rushed. Some of the best experiences are simple: morning coffee, walking through the center, sitting in a park, visiting a market, or spending a sunny afternoon by the lake.

The best way to enjoy Zagreb is to combine the famous sights with everyday local life. That is when the city starts to feel comfortable, familiar, and easy to love.
